The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell. Although in truth they are four volumes, I would still consider them to be one "book" since they're about the same characters and revolve around a central theme (Read more about it on amazon.com to know what I mean). But if I had to pick one of them it'd have to be Justine, if only for the rawness and the sheer energy that it has, something that the later books lack.

Northern Lights by Philip Pullman the first book in the "His Dark Materials" Trilogy. For children and adults alike. It's a bit deep for children and a lot of (amazing) fantasy for adults that feeds the immagination.
