What is unity? Why would you want that? If you mean unity as all of us waving the flag and blindly following our executive officer (and I mean any) then I hope we NEVER attain that. It will mean we have weakend to the point where a little change will destroy us.

In order for a republic to flourish, you must allow for dis-unity and the variances of thought and feeling, as long as these are expressed positively.

I think there are a lot of good ideas that are so called "conservative" and a lot that are so called "liberal". But given the tone of civil discourse now, with pundits spewing mindless vitriol over...I don't know what... it makes it hard to participate in civic action.

It is hard to imagine unity again. While the politics of division has been around for a while, it came into it's own under the Clintons and is now used by every political operation because it apparently works. All you have to do is to look at how we all react to the nastiness. Even though I like GW, it don't much care for Karl Rove many of the things he has done to stir up the base. Even though I like James Carville in a perverse way, I hated to see him and the Clinton team work their devisive methods too.

I am not sure what it would take to get away from this, but as long as we react predictably like Pavlov's dogs to rich vs poor, white vs black, gay vs straight, liberal vs conservative, we will get what we deserve. Imagine if we were all smart enough not to get sucked into that trap.

We already have remarkable unity in this country. Generally speaking, pride in our nationality and heritage is tremendously high. I'm an anti-war liberal and I believe that. I love America, I'm proud, and I think this is a tremendously unified country.

The 'bitter divide' only appears that way because we're so magnified on such close issues. So many differences are resolved that we're left to argue about the unresolvable - differences in opinion that are so close, I don't think they can be resolved.

What may look like a 50-50 split is actually tremendous closeness.

No, we will only have true unity when the senate becomes non-partisan. The conservatives alienate the libreals and vise versa. How can we have a united country when we fight wars with half of the country pittted against the other? As a moderate dem, im sick of this two partisan system.

I hate to say it, but it may take another 9-11. People will never learn to get along in this country, no one wants to get along. Everyone is different and has their own opinion on something. Everything thinks something of everyone. We all have some kind of hate and distrust in one another. There is nothing can really be done about it, unless something really big were to happen.

I hope to God we don't have to experience the tragedy of another 9/11 type attack. As long as the media and the far left are at war with the the Republicans there will be separation. I'm not changing my views for them, not one bit.

War always unites after wards. People see who was wrong & suddenly switch sides to be right - thus unity.

Unfortunately, another 9-11 would unite us & considering recent attacks throughout world, it could occur here.

May we unite before being pushed by another terrorist.

We didn't have true unity during 9/11, we had true fear, and true prejudice.
