I agree with the person that said instead of complaining we should be doing something. It is kinda like the question I asked about having free higher education for everyone, that away at least people that truly want a chance will be able to do something. Unfortunately the problem just expands when you think about being a single parent you would probably love to go back to school, but who is going to watch your children, or pay for your living expanses while you are trying to get a better education. Our system is just messed up, but we should all stand together and get this changed.

Loss of freedom is a huge penalty criminals pay. There are people living in poverty in this country, and it is unfortunate. The reasons of poverty are many, and no easy solutions. By the way, do you volunteer at a Rescue Mission, Soup Kitchen, or tutor program? If not, you should. It will go a lot further to helping the problem than complaining on Yahoo about it.

Obviously something is just wrong with the system..a man can kill his whole family and half of the gov't and will be treated better in jail then a homeless man on the streets...simply because the world is a fcuked up place...its because the pooreer person is seen as worthless..they have no money..are not clean..so they are seen as "less" than even the most disgusting..psychotic murderer

First of all, we can't deny them food/shelter etc as they would all die. I know a lot of you will say good and that's fine but it's not a practical answer. As for tv etc does anyone know why its there? Probably not. It is in place for the protection of the guards and to ensure that the institution runs smoothly. You take away all of these things from prisoners and then fights/riots break out. We are not pampering them but we have to keep them mildly consumed. Trust me, prison is not a nice place. I get frustrated by people who answer and have no idea regarding the facts.

I agree.
I work with many people receiving disability who can't afford to pay for both keeping a roof over their head and putting food on the table. I have also known a few who have deliberately committed a crime just to spend some time in jail because they couldn't feed themselves anymore.

I just read a book about high security prisons and some of the inmates get so crazy that they start spreading feces on the walls and/or throw feces/urine at guards. Prison is not a happy place! Now, the prisons that white collar criminals go to, those are the prisons you've probably heard about with internet access/X Box, etc. What you should be asking is why white collar criminals who waste millions and millions of your dollars get better treatment than people busted because of our ridiculous drug war.

Because people want to ignore what they aren't forced to help. Because our tax money goes somewhat to prisons, people (some of them at least) feel that prisoners should be treated decently. Personally, I say throw them all in a pit (at least the violent and perverted ones) and let them be. Non-violent offenders and the like deserve a little better than that.

Because our politicians have no idea what they're doing. I'm a single mom, and I hate the way I have to struggle sometimes (without welfare) and criminals have it made in prisons, AND I pay the taxes to take care of them. It's really sad, as much as I love our country. Changes will have to be made eventually!

Prisoners suffer loss of freedom. They are told when to eat, when to sleep, when to take a bath etc. They are supervised 24/7. There's always someone watching them. Do you want that?
Homeless, while poor, have freedom, they can do anything they want as long as they stay whithin the bounds of the law. I rather be poor and free, than spend the rest of my life playing xbox.

Because the criminal system of this country is failing. While inmates are having fun playing the X-Box. Our children are not getting education or food.
