Why do people get them and are they worth the risk of getting infected? What about them getting in the way when you eat? Or kiss?

They are just for decoration. They dont do anything for oral sex, unless you get one that vibrates of tickles. I got mine on a whim just becuase and I never got infected. It is tedious to eat with one when you first get it because your using mouth wash way more that normal. but once it heals you can take it out to eat if you want. Kissing with a tongue ring in well as long as you know how to kiss the ring should not be a issue.

There are many reasons... but for a general answer, it's like getting any other piercing, like eyebrow or ear.. which a lot of people do just for the sake of it, or for personal satisfaction. Only the person with the tongue ring can say if it's worth the risk, and i'm sure there are many different answers. And after tongue piercings start to heal, i haven't heard many people complain about having trouble eating. As for kissing, tongue piercings are also popular for pleasurable reasons...
