There was no smoke or fire. I just moved in to this condominium and I noticed that it intermittently gave out a split second sound like a bird chirping. This morning, I woke up to a continuous siren-sounding noise that was not as loud as a smoke alarm detecting smoke.

My smoke alarm is connected to electrical wiring. I unscrewed it from its holder this morning and don't think that it has a battery.

If it's dirty, how is it cleaned? It only has a tiny dime-sized area with pinholes on its face.

Low battery alert. Get you a new 9 volt battery and see if the noise goes away.
ps. Change the battery twice a year ( I do mine when the time changes so I won't forget)

I agree, is could be a battery, but id you are in a condo it might be hard wired if it is then you have a bad detector and it needs to be replaced
