What motivates them to behave so awfully? Is there something psychologically wrong with them? Are they jerks in person, too?

To slightly change an old axiom, "The internet is the last bastion of a coward." It's really a very childish thing to do, and they know they can get away with it on the internet. I would guess that most of these people, while probably not as rude in person because of potential consequences, would prove to be immature in other aspects of their lives as well.

Anonymity can make people do crazy things. I'd wager that some of the biggest online jerks are quiet in person; hiding behind a keyboard gives them a chance to try having a more gregarious personality without any risk.

Two reasons. One is that the Internet is the most completely anonymous form of communication yet devised. It is a lot easier to hurl insults at other people if they don't know who you are or have any way of confronting you. Two is that the people who are jerks on the Internet are also jerks in real life. In real life, others ignore/reject them, so they turn to the Internet to disseminate their vitriol.

Its easier for them as anonymous figures online to torment and harass other people..in person they can be the sweetest most innocent person..but in some cases the person could actually jsut be a complete asshole..people take comfort in hiding behind the computer screen..people can not see them..so they figure why not do something here because i cant do it in reality

Mostly it's the fact that they do not have to physically face a living breathing human being that can talk back. It's a high for them.

Fear of getting punched in the nose by acting a fool in person, or quite possibly they are all kids who just haven't been beaten by their parents enough.

Because they r jerks. They think people won't know who they are in real life (it's true though..)

Anonymity gives people false bravado and a fearlessness that they usually don't possess in real life.
