Yahoo Messenger is a FREE. Download. Just below the download bar, it'll tell you--depending on if you're running dial up or DSL, how long the download will take.
On my DSL, the whole thing took 3 minutes for me; it would have been far longer, probably 50 minutes via dial up.

It is free to download. How long it takes really depends on the speed of your internet connection.
If you have Cable or DSL, it may take 4 to 5 minutes.
If you have 56k modem, it may take about 47 minutes.
I downloaded the new Yahoo Messenger just yesterday; that's why I remember.

Yahoo! Messenger is completly free, and takes about 3 1/2 min. DSL+, and ~1 hour on Dial-Up

If you mean windows messenger, nothing, and on dsl a bit more then a minute, dial up, a lot more (think half hour, more maybe)
