Klingons do not have pointy ears. I believe that you have mistaken them for Vulcans (who are known for their pointy ears).

Because they are aggressive and pointy ears are clearly a sign of aggressiveness. I hear Mike Tyson wants to meet some for lunch.

Vulcans and Romulans have pointed ears, Klingons have ridges on their noses and foreheads.

They don't. Vulcans and Romulans do...not Klingons.

The only explanation ever offered was that Spock got his ears caught in an automatic rice picking machine (it was a joke).

Are you sure you don't mean Vulcans or Romulans? In any case, it is simply a costume for human actors. No scientific basis for this has ever been proffered.
