Sadism and masochism.
Named after the Marquis de Sade, it is sexual activity that involves inflicting pain (sadism) in others, or enjoying pain (masochism).
It can involve bondage, dripping candle wax, or a host of other things, some are pretty grim IMO.

There is not necessarily a sexual component to Sadism or Masochism, although much of S&M's practices are of a sexual nature. There is, in Sadism, a desire to inflict discomfort, pain, and harm. This can be physical, emotional, even imaginary.
For the masochist, it boils down to the feelings of insignifigance, inferiority or a wish to be dominated, either physically or emotionally. One byproduct of which is that you are no longer considered responsible for your own actions. If you are a submissive in a D/s (notice the Dominate capital D and the submissive small s) relationship, you derive no guilt from doing things you have been "ordered" to do by the Dominant partner, things you would normally choose not to do on your own.
A masochist may say, "Beat Me, Beat me"..to which a true Sadist would say "NO", thereby inflicting a punishment by denying the masochist what they desired.
Sadism can be manifested in children, the example of a child jerking a cat's tail, the school bully shoving a kid down on the playground, which on the face of it, may seem like tame examples. however, if these acts are not admonished or corrected, the child may grow into an adult without any moral compunction against further acts of the more violent forms of Sadism.
Masochism, in it's mildest adolescent form, may be embodied in the guy who is willing to help the cute girl in class do her schoolwork, but is not noticed in her social heirarchy, or the girl who always ends up in the back seat when friends go cruising.
In it's adult form, you might find men or women staying in unsatisfying or abusive marraiges or relationships because they don't have the confidence to leave the situation or think that they are getting "what they deserve".
And then you can argue for the sexual component of the S&M definition, which I'll leave to others.

Sadism and masochism. Usually a type of sex where people enjoy inflicting pain on others and having it inflicted on them.
Try Wikipedia. I'm not going into any details!
