I am live in suburban, South Eastern PA. I am looking for some ideas of really cool, wicked looking ornamental trees. Something that is relatively on the smaller side (< 10 ft tall). I want something unique that people are going to look at and say, "wow, that is really an awesome looking tree" Any Ideas? Thanks!

Ther are

flowering crabs
chinese fringe tree
serviceberry
Heptacodium micinoides-one of my favorites
Crape Myrtle-if you are in zone 6
Sweet bay magnolia

All of these are small trees and with some "inside-out' pruning you could keep them at 10-12 feet.

Good ornamentals for this area include:

Wisteria
Dogwoods
Magnolia
Japanese red maples
Cherry blossoms

If you want to see all the ones that will grow and buy some for cheap, go to the Arbor Day Foundation. They have all the info you will need and sell trees also.

The best small trees are dogwoods and Japanese maples, lovely most of the year. Crabs are nice when they bloom but not the rest of the year. Consider also the crepe myrtles, which can be trained like trees, and the serviceberry, which give edible fruit.
