Photographs were made leading up to and during the Apollo missions. The "dark side" is slightly more cratered, which is thought to be a consequence of that face tending to face "outwards" in our little system, thereby encountering more asteroids, et cetera.

Only a little. There are photographs of the opposite side of the moon that date back from 1959, when the Soviet Union lanched the first probe to go around the moon. It turns out to be similar to the Earth-side part, but it has indications of more meteorite impacts and craters. It seems that our next-door neighbour has been acting like a guardian for us in terms of meteorites.

The other side of the moon has been thoroughly photographed. You may check http://moon.google.com/ . There you may find a complete map of the moon, not only the face you are used to see ;-)
