I'd say that the best thing about going to the post office is the expectation of letters, i.e. the chance that there is a fat letter with your name on it bearing some unexpected news of far away places.

It is a small feeling of expectation that one gets watching your 25c trinket roll down a metal shoot, or when scratching off a lottery ticket.

There is the bright expectation of a saveable stamp up in the corner, the physical heft of the letter itself, the thought that it has gone across waters that you yourself are too poor to cross, for only 37c.

One always hopes that in the dark moor of the mailbox something hopeful has docked.
