Love? The US doesn't 'love' either sect of Islam.
But, what is happening, is that the Shiites in Iraq are very strongly supporting their newfound freedom and their new government, filling the ranks of the new Iraqi army and police forces. The Iraqi Sunnis, on the other hand, have been instigating sectarian violence for years. They are a minority that achieved prominence when Saddam took control of Iraq.
But, the US is not that overjoyed with the Shiite imams in Iran, who also seek to undermine the new Iraqi government. So, in Iraq, the US is getting along better with the Shiites. That's as far as I'll go.

Most US citizens wouldn't know the difference. Most US citizens can't differentiate a Muslim from a Hindu.
