AVENUES run north and south. BOULEVARDS run east and west.
Folks, do none of you pay attention? AVENUES only run north and south, BOULEVARDS only run east and west. There is a reason that it's done this way, to assist travellers with finding their way around.

Not really any difference regarding street names and stuff. Long ago a Boulevard was a main street with shops and banks on the side. An Avenue generally was a residential or mixed office type of street. But cities have changed alot since then and what once was a town square might be a housing project or factory slum. Streets are just named whatever now. A road by any other name is still a road.

In this case, as a type of road, a boulevard is usually a wide, multi-lane arterial divided thoroughfare, often with an above-average quality of landscaping and scenery.(boulevard)
It is also a common part of street names, often for roads with lines of trees on either side, but far from always so. (Avenue)
