Paternity papers are various legal documents, normally used to indicate who the biological father of a child is. A birth certificate has a place on it for the name of the father, and while this is not always correct, it is a common one. Court-mandated DNA tests will provide rock solid paternity papers. If the mother knows the social security number of her former lover, she may be able to use this as well, at least as a way to try and get some other paternity papers.

Paternity is technically a question of what male provided the sperm to produce a child. Legal matters in different states, or for different purposes may expand it to a question of who the biological mother and father are, who served as a father to the child, or even the most broad consideration, of who served as parents to a child.

Generally, paternity papers are used only during divorce proceedings, and for child support proceedings. Both of these are serious legal processes, which can go very wrong if you screw up. If you have a reason to need paternity papers, I suggest you get a lawyer who is good enough to explan to you exactly what they are, and are not, how to get them, and when to use them.

Some states use them for welfare pruposes, or even such things as school enrollment, and daycare services.

There are basically 2 kinds. One is when your child is born when youre unmarried and the assumed father signs "A Voluntary Acknowledgement Of Paternity." The other is after a DNA test proves the paternity.

1. Court documents to get the supposed father into court to admit paternity or submit to a paternity test.

2. An affidavit or other document in which a man admits he is the father of an illegitimate child. All children born to married persons are assumed to be children of the marriage, unless challenged in court in timely fashion.

Wow! I hope that you are not asking because you got served with them because that would be so sad on many levels. They are papers that either tell you who the father of a child is or they are papers that you are served with to tell you that the father of a child wants to find out if he is really the father. Depends on what context you received them.
