There should be some tuition costs for students entering post-secondary education, but for lower income capable students, assistance should be given.
As for health care, I read studies that indicate the top reason for individual bankruptcies in the US is due to unpaid medical bills. There are millions of Americans who do not have health insurance and millions more who are under-insured. Despite the fact that US medicine is supposedly not "socialized" like in many other western democracies, it pays out more money in its GDP on health care than any of the other countries that do have universal coverage.
I always considered moving to the US due to some of my skills and business background, where I'd likely find more work, but because of my health I realize I would likely be uninsurable or my insurance costs would be very high ... and the costs would not make it worth my while to leave the Canadian system, even though I feel I am underpaid here.

Everything comes at a price. There's no such thing as free higher education or free medical care. The money has to come from somewhere, and it would come from our taxes. Sure, our government could provide free medical care and free college education to anyone who wanted it, but our Federal income taxes would go up 300% at least (probably more like 400%-500%). There's one other problem -- the Federal Government has a very poor performance record when it comes to any type of services it provides to citizens (very heavy on the bureaucracy and red tape, very light on customer service), so it's very possible that free college education and free medical care would become such a pain with filling out mountains of forms, having applications kicked back because you didn't dot one "I" or cross one "T," having your claims rejected, talking to people who treat you like a number, etc., that many people would wonder why we're wasting so many taxpayer dollars on "services" that are ten times worse than what we have right now.

You are describing the kind of democratic socialism found in Sweden, and I have been interested in that. I think it would make some things much better, but also make others worse. Obviously, people would have access to education and medical care, but the quality of both would likely suffer with so many more people in the colleges, and the doctors would likely make less money, driving down the talkent that field would attract.

Butr what happens if everyone wants to go to harvard? And who pays for the teacher's salaries?
There is no such thing as a free lunch and the money has to come from somewhere.
Would you accept higher taxes to pay for this program?

That would be cool, but everything comes with a price, unless you think professors and doctors should work for free. The result would be even higher taxes for everyone.

I think capitalism is the best system for the US. Similarly, only the best and brightest should have higher education.
If we gave it to everyone, that would bring down the overall value and quality.
It's sort of like survival of the fittest. If you work for it, you deserve it. I don't want it handed to just everyone.

Yes I think America would be alot better off if education were offered to EVERYONE who was willing to learn. As far as medical expenses being paid.....don't hold your breath.

America would be a better place if we could just get rid of government corruption and the excessive squandering of tax payer money.
EXAMPLE; Visit any court house and looak at it. I mean really take a look.
That is real mohogany, and real marble, and real granite, and it just goes on and on.
CHA - CHING goes the register on the tax payer !!!
