the use map allows you to have the map code be kept anywhere in the page, rather than directly with the rest of the code. This allows your code to be cleaner as the active layout is in one part, and the controls (the map) is in another.

well lets say you have one picture of the USA, you can use usemap so if they clicked on texas, it will go to the texas page, if they clicked on NY it go to NY page, etc...

Another expamle, if you had a picture of a car, if they click on the tires, it tells you about the tires, etc...
