Yawning is a reflex triggered by the body's need for increased oxygen. In a situation where one is not getting enough oxygen (think stuffy lecture hall), others are probably also feeling the lack of O2. Seeing others yawn is a reminder to one's body that its own cells are feeling deprived, similar to how watching someone else munch a candy bar can provoke a chocolate craving in one's belly.

They are not. A yawn results when your rhythmic breathing changes. The yawn is to "catch up" as it were. This is why you yawn when you are tired, not exactly because of it. You are too tired to maintain your current rate of breath. Now, when you see someone yawn in your setting, you may be experiencing the same circumstances that caused them to yawn. I have yet to see someone on TV yawn and then feel the compulsion to yawn. It is all in shared circumstances.

thats a good question, i've always wandered that.
I generally put it down to when you see someone yawn, you breath slower, and so you yawn. its down to the whole circularatory system, whereby if the body isn't getting enough air, then an impulse is sent to the brain, telling you to take a sudden gasp of air, its like a sudden boost of energy so your body can continue as normal, even when your tired.

haha no jokes, just yawned then thinkin of someone yawning!

i think thats it anyway, i'll look a right fool if it isn't!
