The F-14D was a derivative of the F-14 Tomcat, the Navy's carrier-based air superiority fighter. It's being replaced by the F-18 dual strike fighter. The F-14 is still the only navy jet to use the advanced phoenix air to air missile - the longest range A-A missile in the world. You may have seen the F-14 in the movie Top Gun. It's most recognizable by it's variable geometry wings (the wings sweep from standard to 'delta' shape automatically in accordance with speed and maneuvering.

There was to be.
The F-14D designation had originally been assigned to a cost-reduced, stripped version of the Tomcat, proposed at a time when the rapidly-increasing cost of the F-14A was causing great concern. This project never achieved fruition.

yes. The Navy used them, They are being decommissioned. Top Gun and The Final Countdown features the Tomcat. They are fantastic airplanes.
Rent either one of these films and watch the F-14's. They are the ones with the swept back wings and the wings open up for slow flight.
