Maybe someday. If you look at American politics 100 years ago, you would see that religion was way, way more influential on politics than it is today. Odds are this country is trending towards a true divide when it comes to church and state. It just may take a long *** time.

Well, does the federal government operate any churches? Nope. Do any churches run the government? No, again.

Then you DO already have separation of church and state.

What you are talking about is separating religious beliefs and law, a completely different thing. And not necessarily a good one.

You see, it was religious believers who came up with the concept of human rights, who created the abolitionist movement, who strove for individual liberty and freedom from government intrusion. And it was anti-religion believers who created Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism, cultural revolutions, gulags and concentration camps.

So, you might want to be careful what you wish for - you just might get it.

No, there will never be a separation of church and state. When the Pilgrams came to America, they brought the Bible with them, the laws of our land is founded by the laws of the Bible. The government can say that they are separated, but the Bible gives structure, and our land was founded by that structure. Even in our government, we are labeled as conservatives, republicans, and democrats. Conservatives are quiet when it comes to most issues, but when it comes to religion, they tend to be as republicans who claim to be christian or highly religious people. It even matters to them, when the y elect other officials, whether that person is christian or not.

as far as i know, nothing says that there actually has to be a division.

also, the absence of religion depends on the existence of religion. it is impossible to have a true separation.

Not as long as "in God we trust" is around. A mix isn't a bad thing, not as bad as a truely separate ideal.
