Well, you have to buy something, just not the fog machine.
Just put dry ice in water, it will give a fog like effect.

The simplest way to create 'fake fog' will require you to buy some dry ice. You can get it at some grocery stores and it isn't very expensive.

Once you've got your dry ice (use safe handling precautions), add water and -- viola! Fog!

You have to buy ONE thing, dry ice. You can get it at wal-mart or albertsons. Put it in water and it makes tons of fog. Don't touch it with your bare hands though.

dry ice either dry or wet will give off fog, but having it dry means you need to have a pretty high temperature to get it sublime at the rate you want it to.

try dry ice but you need special gloves for it.
