3 times a day is pretty safe. Just as much as they can eat in 3 minutes.
Goldfish eat more in the summer, when the temperature is higher. I feed mine 4 times a day. from may through August, in Virginia.
This is a pretty established regimine, by goldfish breeders in Asia. Less than 3 a day will mean sacrificing the growth potential of your fish.

A pinch of food once a day will be plenty. In the wild, most fish only get the opportunity to eat every once in a while anyway, so they don't need more than a little bit. Just don't over feed them, that is the WORST way to kill a fish.

Read the back of the food box and try that for a while. Then increase it and if they still eat it quickly then keep it at that. DO NOT OVERFEED! this is how all of my fish have died! RIP bobby, beckham, speedy and carr.
