I mean, I really get tired of all the Harry-hype sometimes. Seriously, how stupid can one series of books get???

It's not that they're badly written. It's just that, in my opinion, people go too far with it all. It's become a slightly creepy obsession.

Also, they lack originality. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Well, of course I've read them. And I admit, they were interesting. But how can some people be so freakin' obsessed with them?

Another point: Would Harry Potter have done so well had it been Harriet Potter?

Jedimaster--Actually, I CAN name quite a few books with similiar plot lines. You can get a list of them if you do a google search for "books similiar to Harry Potter".

Fungi--It's not that I don't understand how people love and believe the Harry Potter books, it's just that there are so many other great books out there, ones that truly deserve a little of the attention.

I agree. There are millions of books, that are really worse reading and reading books like Harry Potter is only wasting of time. I personally haven't got much free time to read, so in my free time I prefer reading something more ... I don't know.. serious may be... but for children under 13-14 it could be interesting.

My problem is that I grew up reading The Worst Witch books which are so similiar to Harry Potter. Replace wizards with witches living in an English boarding school and you have the Potter books.

it's called escapism. People wish they were living this real life and they feel a part of it when they read the books because the books were written to read like this. It's usually the people with no life that get really obsessed and it's because they wish that if they had a life, it was like harry potter's. This is why fantasy is so popular, because most people have pretty depressing lives.
The books are also easy to read and so a lot of people find it convenient that it's so easy to read. I mean, anyone can read them and understand them.

The Harry Potter experience is based on one thing... Its far from original, but it is EASY to read and as you said it is interesting.... People will read anything. and it makes some "non readers" feel good to pick up a book and actually read what appears to be a pretty big book... Its the same reason Stephen King is a household name... besides the stand and most of the dark tower series.... king puts nothing original down on paper....he is just easy to read scary books... oops it appears I've drawn a tangent to the question.... will lay off the keys now lol

I agree with you, kind of. It is an amusing set of books, and who can argue when JK Rowling has earned over a billion dollars on them? But some people take them way too far. People in my grandmother's church have been arguing about these books and about the 'witchcraft' in them [granny ripped me a new *** for taking my niece and nephews to see the last harry potter movie] . . . It's fantasy, and if they cannot teach their children the difference between fantsy and reality, then they do not need to be complaining. Anyway, Granny don't know that I'm a wiccan either. :p

I am wondering if any other books ever had such a weight of marketing and hype behind them. Perhaps this, combined with word of mouth and internet buzz, combines to create a sort-of mythology around the books. They are accessable to children as well as adults, and easily read.

Overrated, certainly. I would like to see as much talk around the "classics" as Harry Potter. It would certainly give me something better to talk about than "is Snape guilty" in line. But it is precisely the fact of their popularity why I read them. Because it IS fun to gossip about celebrities, baseball teams, and along the same lines, a popular children novel that seemingly everyone has read.

I do. But it may be because I have been in customer service when the first few books were released & I would had people scream at me because they did not receive their precious "Harry Potter" books on time.
Like it was my fault the supply was less than the demand & they waited until the day before to order

lower than no circumstances. positive, there is better books and videos obtainable, yet Harry Potter holds a particular position in each and every fan's heart. JK Rowling has created an entire international, and inspired human beings and enthralled human beings. Plus, a lot of human beings, which incorporates me, have grown up with Harry Potter.

Harry Potter is ok.But there is no need to make such a fuss about it.Especially when a new book is released. You can't turn anywhere without bumping into Harry stuff. There are other books which are equally good or better than Harry Potter. Now they are beginning to make a similar fuss about Eragon.

honestly, i love them, especially the later ones. (in rowling's defense, she intended the books to be read by children who reflected harry's age in each book - so as he's gotten older, the books have gotten more sophisticated and complex). when the new ones come out, my kids and i have tricks and contests to see who gets to read them first!

as with any 'banned' book (of which potter ranks right up on the top of the list) is that they're usually banned by ppl who've never read them.

the hype can be a bit much -- but remember, the hype itself is geared toward kids, as well - to get them to buy the products, see the movies, etc.
