Yes it is

Realizing the importance of quality customer service, more and more companies are using mystery shoppers to know if their businesses are meeting the needs of their customers. Comments from anonymous buyers are also a way to get information on the effectiveness of their staff training and development programs, and identify key areas where additional sales training may be needed.

A mystery shopper, also called secret shopper or shopper, pretends to be an actual or potential customer of a business. Depending on the research assignment, you will be asked to act like a real customer of the business - try on a wedding dress, test drive a car, stay in a hotel, open a bank account, eat in a restaurant, buy a piano, even apply for apartment rental.

The best resource to check out is the National Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) http://www.mysteryshop.org , an organization of mystery shopping companies. Check out their listing of shopping assignments by country and by state from member companies. Some of the listings may be outdated, but the companies listed in their database are usually the biggest companies in the industry and most importantly, legitimate. Companies are accepted as members of the association only if they have been in existence for two years and they can submit proof of business existence. Make a list of these companies and check out their requirements to be a mystery shopper.

Yes! Although I don't think the pay is great, but would be a pretty easy job if you have an open mind!

I'll tell you what, when I was younger and worked in retail I hated mystery shoppers because we constantly had to be on our toes! Now as an adult and consumer, they are wonderful! I hate going in store and not being shown any gratitude! Stores that enforce mystery shoppers are great!

Yes being a mystery shopper is legitimate work. I saw a article about it and the women giving their opinions said it was a great job. You get to shop and earn at the same time! Genius!

Ring local enquiries about it and check the yellow pages. xx good luck

Yes, but you can't make a living at it.

I've done it. The reimbursements are fairly small. You have to outlay cash often first. It takes 6-8 weeks to be repaid. You use your own vehicle, gas, etc. For $4-6 to go order a pizza and then spend an hour writing a report afterwards, it's just not worth it.

It's nice if you treat it like a rebate program, but it's not a career like they make it sound.

It is legitimate, but it is more of a way to get some free nights out than as an actual job. A guy I work with does mystery shopping and he is always bragging about the freebies he gets but is far from being able to leave this job to devote himself to mystery shopping.

It is legit, but you do not make much more than a free meal etc. I would receive one free appetizer, 2 free entrees, a drink and a dessert. Afterwards you may be paid $15 or so to fill out a 10 page in-depth questionaire also. You had to comment on each course, service, cleanlienss, atomosphere, etc. I did this at one time but it was more trouble than it was worth. You can not make a living at it.

yes, there are legitimate mystery shoppers. i don't know any by name, but i have a friend in England who does it for extra cash, and my mom has done it as well in North Carolina. i have been wanting to do it myself, but haven't gotten around to researching a good company where i am. have fun, but be cautious, too. sometimes you spend your own money and they reimburse you, but they have limits, and you have to keep your receipts.

Sure is.

You end up making less than minimum wage.
Good job if you like doing comparison shopping and don't need the money.

yes, but the pay is really small for how much time you have to spend plus the transportation and stuff. it's really more like a hobby. can't make a living off of it.
