You say EverQuest so I assume the first one. I played EQ for three years, so I can compare the two for you fairly effectively.
1. Somewhat, but I wouldn't call it cartoonish. If you're talking comparing to EQ2 then I'd say yeah, but compared to EQ no, not really. At worst it would be Anime-ish. Yes, some things are exaggerated, and the colors tend to be more vivid than it is in EQ, but in general nothing is worse than the first EQ models (hmmm...now that I think about it there was that 'upgrade' where the Erudites got the Big Foreheads. If you played after that point, you might find them a tad cartoonish but it's in keeping with the game and you really don't notice it).
2. Not true at all. If anything, there's more adults in WoW percentage-wise than were in EQ as it is more 'mainstream' that EQ was. The points about Alliance vs. Horde are very true, however (the Alliance has 'h0t chix!' and a penchant for angst...Horde tends to be more mature, serious gamers because the characters are not as 'pretty'). I personally have seen more adults in ratio on the server I play on, but it IS a "roleplaying" server, which tends to draw more adults. Whatever you do, do not play on a PvP server, as this draws all the anti-social 12-year-olds and rage-filled alienated Counterstrikers.
3. You don't ever NEED to group, you can make it to 60 without doing so but you can't go everywhere and do everything solo. However, it's not as entertaining. But there's no point, like there was in EQ, where I just couldn't get through a series of levels solo.
4. Other stuff:
a. I do recommend getting a 10 day trial if you can if you really are leery. I'd hate to have you waste money. But I've played MANY MMORPG's and this is a GOOD game.
b. Crafting/tradeskills: They all actually are good for something, and the mechanics behind them are very nice.
c. Auction house...like the bazaar but you don't have to leave a character there...you can put stuff up for sale and walk away and keep playing
d. Humor/homages: scattered throughout the game are little things like a guy in one of the cities named Lenny McCoy. Little things like that make it fun.
e. Blizzard, though not perfect, blows Sony out of the water for customer service and stability.
f. Characters are balanced. I remember the big thing with EQ was constant tinkering/whining about class balance. For the most part, the characters were balanced to start with. There's been some minor tweaking, but no class has become overpowering.
g. Downtime is MUCH less than it was in EQ, at least by the time I stopped playing. Not as much time medding/healing up.
h. Flightpaths. No endless running
i. No XP loss on death! No running to your body naked to get killed again and again. It costs money and time (and not much of either). Dying is not the soul-wrenching experience it is/was in EQ
Lots of other stuff. But try it, you'll like it. However, if you're bored with MMORPG's, you might not get un-bored here...you might want to take a break with another genre. When it really comes down to it, they're all pretty close to the same game. If you dig exploring and discovering new things, it might make up for it in that it's just a really neat world, but if you're bored with the basic mechanics of the game style you might be just as bored on Azeroth as you were on Norrath.

1) go to worldofwarcraft.com to see some screen shots and see what you think. It's really a matter of what you're used to...I love the graphics, personally.
2) depends on the server/time you play/race you pick. Alliance does tend to be younger. If you're really concerned and want "mature" players, try horde, but stay out of the Barrens...(that might just be my server, tho)
3) Depends on your class. Hunters, Rogues and Shadow Priests can level to 60 on their own, but your gear will suck, hard. Also, there is no way you can get the good sets of gear on your own, you have to run with a group for a pve set, and hit the battlegrouds for the pvp set.
4) see if a friend has the ten day card you can use, and try it. If by the tenth day, you don't like it, your not out any $$, you just lost a little time. You can also buy time cards at Circut City.
I'd recommend you try it. I love it, myself.

My answer - Go ahead, give it a try!
1 - A little cartoonish, but not crappy or cheesy
2 - Dunno. My husband and I play it, as well as some of our adult friends.
3 - Yes, you can do the whole game solo if you want
4 - I think some of the scenarios are very challenging, but still fun.
I really enjoy the comments the characters make, especially if you keep clicking on them (I'm just weird that way I guess). There are plenty of different quests and scenarios to keep the game fresh.

Yahoo video games has a large decision of on line video games you could play with people. For video games you could play on my own, fb has distinct good ones like Bejeweled, Peggle, and Tetris.
