I have been applying for Federal jobs (entry level) for two years now, and can't even get to the point of receiving an interview. Does anyone know a different way to go about this? Many of the applications I am basing on education because I have a 3.91 GPA and a Bachelors. I also have 2 years of corporate experience. I can't even seem to land a secretary interview!! Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Believe it or not but your experience is actually quite normal. Overall, it took me nearly a year and a half to secure my first federal government position. What's funny is that although I didn't have my college degree, I did finish 3 years of school and still managed to get my foot in the door. My cousin has a masters degree and still hasn't gotten into the federal gov't after nearly 8 years of trying. Go figure.

Realistically, there's really nothing you can do to speed up the process. The gov't moves very slowly throughout the hiring process. Not just that but some positions that are advertised are sometimes cancelled, and you may not be informed about it. A lot of agencies are facing hiring freezes and have resulted to hiring contractors and other outsourcing (not a good bet). There are a number of reasons why the hiring process can drag on.

Patience is a virtue. Good luck!

In the agency where i work, veterans have preference in direct hire. They get 5 extra points. So basically it's tough to get in if you are not a veteran. Best thing is to work for a contractor that is on that gov't facility to get a feel for the lay of the land.

i work for the FAA.
