In the political world, republicans are considered right wing-or right. (As well as conservatives.) Democrats are referred to as left wing-or left. (As well as liberal) Many people are more center, believing in the fiscal structure of one, and the social structure of the other. The way most people vote is primarily based on the strength of the belief. Example: If you were to consider anti abortion laws a violation of your rights and this were to be your primary concern you would probably vote democrat. Or if you believed in a pro life status you would probably vote republican.

In politics, left refers to those who do not respect personal responsibility and think that governmental programs are the answer for all the problems of the country.

In politics, right refers to people who are "right", or correct.

In general the "left" is liberal and the "right" is conservative.
The "left" tends toward wanting more government involvement. For example national healthcare. The right tends toward less government and more personal responsibilities.

In the U.S., left tends towards socialism (big government) and right moves toward anarchism (no government). These are extremes, but typically left is for bigger government, and right is for limited government.
