That's a hard one. Quite simply, almost EVERYTHING about modern music started with, or was popularized by, The Beatles. Artists writing their own songs, musical experimentation of all kinds, making every song on an "album" a good song instead of just having the single and a lot of other crappy tracks, speaking out about sex, drugs, and politics, taking control of their product, concept albums, etc. If you look at the charts in the 60s, they were always several years ahead of the rest.
Then again, their music may not "speak to" folks today because there HAVE been so many improvements in production, etc. People may just feel that they were good in their time, but that they prefer modern bands because they are their own age and the production and writing is new and not what their parents played.
I still think The Beatles are the best. But the new stuff is good too, and it's hard to convince people that the best music is all 30 or 40 years old.

First of all, you're awesome for thinking this. I'm also a huge Beatles fan and believe that anyone who dislikes them doesn't have taste :). I admire them so much because of how unique their music is-I think that's what you should try to emphasize when you tell your friends about them. As time passed, they wrote songs that were like no other. I also think I could come up with an appropriate Beatles song for any given situation, so if you try to do the same, maybe you'll be more convincing.

The helped create and/or better define numerous genres in the White Album alone, let alone their whole catelogue. "Helter Skelter" is pretty much a metal song. The guitar solo on "Taxman" was revolutionary for its time. "Yer Blues" is blues through and through. The backwards tape loop solo on "I'm Only Sleeping" was waaay ahead of its time. There's so much more evidence, but this is just a sampling of what they did.
You friend is probably the way I was for awhile - ignorant of their non-single songs (which are the best ones I think). If all he has to go by are "Love Me Do" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," he's likely to thing the Beatles were nothing special. Once I delved into their albums from the prime of their career I realized exaclty how good they were.

Personally, I don't see how a band that created "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" could possibly suck. Maybe your friends just regard the Beatles as an "oldies" band.
The question is, what kinds of music do your friends like? If they are hard rock fans, play them "Revolution". If they are into folk, play them the whole "Rubber Soul" album.

u can't convince your friends. I tried convincing my friends abt a band that i love but it didn't really work. Just let your friends think whatever they want to think. I learnt that you can almost never change someone's opinion about something. I think the beatles are really good.
