Mudslinging is essential for politicians to get elected and is, in part, a creation of the media. Mudslinging in America has been around since the adoption of the Constitution. The creation of political parties was the one major oversight of our founding fathers, and probably should have been banned from the beginning. Political parties are disastrous for our democracy and contribute to majority rule by minority representation. For example:in the U.S. roughly 50 percent of eligible voters vote. Of that 50 percent, roughly half vote Democrat, and half vote Republican. However, whoever wins majority is the one that rules. So if the Democrats win more seats, they are the ruling party. Thus, you have a situation in which government representatives of only 25 percent (half of a half) of the population are calling all of the shots. That is not the sign of a healthy democracy.
In terms of the religious dichotomy, that is just ridiculous. I personally think that religion is outdated and serves no function in our modern society, but it seems to me that anyone who purports to be religious should vote for the politicians who fight for the downtrodden, poor, and down on there luck individuals. As a generalization, these politicians tend to be Democrats. So when so-called religious people vote for Republican politicians, who overwhelmingly support the interests of big business, I have to scratch my head. But what do I know?

I guess that the assumption is Liberal Democrat and Conservative Republican. Given that, even the name 'Liberal' has changed over the last 30-40 years. Today, 'Liberal' is synonymous with leftist (or socialist - sorry Canada).
Being a Conservative ... In my opinion, a 'true Conservative' believes in limited government, limited spending, and a bit fearful of government power and interference.
There are Conservative Democrats, as well as, Liberal Republicans (RINOs - Republican In Name Only ... not sure if there are DINOs....).

People on Yahoo Answers are usually just trying to get a rise out of other people. Most democrats and republicans can discuss their ideas in a civil matter with out resulting to childish name calling. Just ignore the people that are acting ignorant.

Many people won't give their political opinion in this forum because of the mudslinging. The mudslingers have taken over this category. They by no means represent Americans as a whole. Most Americans are middle of the road, it just seems that extremists tend to be most vocal. I used to be one of them, until they started to pull me into their trap of being this way or that, so lately, I stay away from this category as well.

My perfect stereotypical Republican is Rush Limbaugh, a bloated hypocrite, who insults the competition even as being an undereducated, mendacity, less than the impact of alcohol addled, three times divorced pig of a guy. in case you don't like the stereotype, stop listening to him and regurgitating each element he says ad nauseam. Idiots did not vote Bush in the White living house two times. the first time he replaced into put in in the White living house with the help of the U.S. even although Al Gore had extra votes. (also brother Jeb and his SOS scrubbed very just about 60K black electorate from the registry in Florida.) the second one time there have been shenanigans in Ohio and elsewhere with the DOJ committing all kinds of voter fraud and native land protection calling terror alerts each few days to shop the citizenry afraid and keen to vote for Daddy Warbucks.
