I have been trying to get my poem published and I just can't seem to find anywhere to do so. Everywhere I look seems to lead to a dead end.

Does anyone out there know which websites publish poems?

I would suggest getting it peer reviewed first. Whether or not you can get it published depends on the quality, and where you are looking to do so. Magazines, literary journals, and (very seldom) whole books are dedicated to poetry. If you go to college, oftentimes campus publications are the way to go, or if in highschool, then look to the yearbook. If it is truly with merit, you will have a fair chance of getting it published in a literary journal by sending it in.

However, if others find it mediocre or simply unpublishable for whatever reason, you might want to self-publish by posting it on a website. I would suggest building a body of work and continuing to practice writing, and of course continuing to seek criticism from others.

I have found, through a brief search, that http://www.poetry.com/ is having a contest, though I can't speak for their validity.

Is there a reason you want to publish them online? Try poetry.com (I've never used it, and knows people against it, and they'll want you to buy books, but whatever).

As for publishing, you need to be patient. It takes a long time to get published! If you want more than just web-based publishing check out my answer (linked below) to a similar question today.

It is copyrighted once you write it. You can always fill out the form and send it to the copy wright office and for $35.00 you will get a little letter from them saying it is protected. But under American law once you write it, it is protected. The only burden put under you in court would be to prove that you wrote it, and when you wrote it. Most modern computers have files that are naturally in word or almost any program that can identify when it was made. So don't worry so much about protection... in this case.
