don't go provoking or looking for trouble, and if you do this than you should avoid trouble.
While true for the most part, its not entirely substantiated.

I always understood the quotation to be..."don't trouble trouble, until trouble troubles you"...now is that a new question?
Meaning don't go looking for problems, they will come along in their own time.

I think that the first and fourth occurances of "trouble" is referring to messing with or fiddling with something. The second and third occurrances of "trouble" has to do with anything that makes something bad happen. So, it could also read, "Do not look for mischeviousness, because doing these things can cause more trouble than you can handle."

This is a silly way of saying.. Don't get involved in trouble...or the trouble will effect you..."Trouble" meaning a bunch of things: Drama..fights..scandal...bad business that isn't your business...anything obviously not good that you dont need to get mixed up in.

if you ask for it in the way you live your life, it will come. for instance, if a teenager puts something illegal on thier car, they will get pulled over and fined.
