Anything I've ever read by Maya Angelou, including poetry, has been both beautiful and heartbreaking. She's a very endearing person who lived a life she was proud of.

It depends on which book is closest to something that interests you. You'll have a hard time focusing on a book that doesn't contain anything that can emotionally involve you even the tiniest bit.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
This is the autobiography of Maya Angelou. It's a true story, and it's beautifully, heartbreakingly written. She had a very hard life before she began reaching acclaim as a writer, however, it's a story of overcoming even some of the most impossible hurdles.
I loved this book.
Friday Night Lights
A story about America's biggest secular religion - football. If you're not into football at all, this is not the book for you. It takes place in a broken down town called Odessa in West Texas, and is about the team's drive for the championship.
Freedom Writer's Diary
This is a compilation of diaries that teenagers from Long Beach, CA wrote at the prompting of their teacher and how it changed many of those student's lives. A lot of these kids deal with drugs, gangs, and violence in their everyday lives. It's a fairly good read, and it didn't take me too long. I enjoyed getting inside these kids head because they grew up a lot differently than I.
All of these stories are based on or are written about true events. My best suggestion is choose which one you think strikes home the best with you, and read that one. Enjoy!

It appears half of the answers (maybe a bit less) didn't read your full question and just answered to get points.
I haven't read any of them, but I know that Angelou is an amazing writer and I know people love this book. However, Friday Night LIghts has also gotten a lot of praise from my freshman comp classes (people who hate to read love the book, people who love to read love it too-go figure). I don't know anything about Freedom Writers Diary.
Have you checked out amazon reviews of the books? Below are links to them. I'd read through them and see what other people say about the books there (and read the summaries to see which sounds better). You could also check out page length there and pick the smallest if you're dreading the project, but I don't recommend that if one looks more interesting.
Good luck and happy reading!

The Freedom Writers' Diary is AWESOME. It is incredible what the teacher and kids did.
Maya Angelou's book is great too.
It depends on if you want something more like a biography (caged bird) or lives of troubled teens (Freedom Writers')

Friday night lights of course.
Why?
Because there was a movie on it you big silly.
Really the caged bird is an awesome book. Never read the other two, but Cage Bird is always a good choice.

read Maya Angelou. It is not long, and it is pretty easy. She is an amazing author and there is a lot of information out there to help you with a critical review. If you need help, feel free to contact me-- I got my degrees in English, and I got to hear Ms. Angelou speak not long ago, so i might be able to help!

I'd go with the Angelou one. Just look at the title. Do you know why the caged bird sings?
