What you are asking about is called "adverse possession". After you have occupied land that is not yours for a number of years, you can in effect claim that land as yours; the number of years, and various other conditions, are different for different states.

"Prescriptive easement" is related--after a certain number of years using the land, you acquire the right to continue using it, but I don't believe you gain outright title to the land.

The period for establishing prescriptive easement in CT is 15 years according to the last reference I have posted.

Most states require 10 years of open, continuous, exclusive, adverse, and notorious possession (in other words, you don't abandon it, you claim it as your own, even against the real owner, you don't have permission to be there, and the owner does not remove you during that time). Some states also require you to pay the taxes.

In other words, how long can you illegally live on a piece of land that's not yours before you can steal it?
