I'd base it on a combination of statistics, but not just on homers, hits, wins, or whatever.
If you're only using stats, then I think a combination of OBP, OPS, and the sabrmetric stats like RCAA or Win Shares would be better than the plain old counting stats. Too many big stat numbers are achieved just through longevity, or aren't as impressive as they sound (eg. Pete Rose has a ton of hits, but his OBP and power were both lacking).
Of course, you can't make anything like this completely objective, so personal opinions or biases will always enter into the equation, too.
If I had to choose my two, though, I'd probably go with Ruth and Bonds. If you eliminate Bonds because of the 'roids, I'd probably choose Cobb, even though I much prefer Gehrig and Musial.

Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron.
I based it on more than just home runs even though these are the 2 greatest home run hitters in the game (eliminating Barry Bonds because he took steroids). Babe Ruth was a pitcher at the beginning of his career and still managed to hit as many home runs as he did. Hank Aaron came in the league through criticism and still did what he did. They in my opinion are the best baseball players of all-time.

There is no such thing as the greatest player all time, they may be stand outs but not greatest. Its like I could say T. Gwynn is the best ever, not really true but its just a bias that i have. On pitching I would most likely pick Nolan Ryan, I love the strikeouts and I love the fights he got into

Ted Williams and Babe Ruth. They played for the Red Sox, and the Yankees, the two teams with the most tradition and history to them. Because of their batting ability and charisma, they made baseball a much more popular sport, and it's because of them millions of little boys grew up wanting to play baseball.

honestly this queston is not really possible to answer because baseball goes in time periods which cant be compared beacuse of rule changes and steroid use. but in my opinion all stats offencive and defencive must be considered and pitchers have to be seperated from all other players and all their stats must be taken in consideration. but as for the best ever in my opinion. cy young best pitcher of his time greg maddox best of his time. best players mickey mantle, babe ruth, joe dimaggio. of ther time. as for now the best player by far is Albert pujols and when all is said and done he may end up being considered the best ever. with his offencive stats and under rated defense. no doubt the best.

It's based on opinion. And my opinion is Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson. Both were great baseball players. And Jackie Robinson did so much to make baseball what it is now.

Joe DiMaggio was the greatest all-around player. His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound and lasting impact on the country.
