Why do people always keep there age a secret?

Why do they always backout when somone asks there age?Even some of my teacher would be afriad to tell there age!people alway do it on line.why don't they do it in reality??please make you answers clear so i can choose the best answer!

There are several reasons that I believe why people (some) always (depending on individuals and situation) keep their age as a secret:
1. They might think its cool to keep a secret about their identity, or just because "cool" people does it (by acting mysterious).
2. Lack of self-confidence. Most of the time, women fell in this category unfortunately. Due to stress, school, work, life-style, life trauma event, relationship issues, many woman look older than their age.
3. Lack of love. Same thing as No. 2, many woman felt insecure that they're still single at such and such age. "You're not married and you're 38?!" They don't like comments like those.
4. Identity crisis. We live in an age of Internet, fraud, credit rating, and identity issue, and your birthday is part of that components.
5. Level of trust and friendship. Most of the time, its a matter of how much person A knows person B (you or your friends). Sometimes people just don't like you and you don't know that. Its nice enough that they didn't say "Its none of your business." You should able to find out anybodies age once you're very close to them.

I don't! If someone asks, then I proudly proclaim that I have made it to the age of 53! I do it in reality as well as on-line, because it is reality to me! Teachers are taught not to divulge their age, birthplace, birthdate, maiden names & other personal information to students & faculty. Women have always been taught to play a "cat & mouse" game regarding their age & I find this quite annoying! It all boils down to VANITY & the fact that many women have low self esteem & love to hear people tell them that they look younger than they really are. Even if it is a lie, they like hearing it! Men don't seem to be as caught up in the age thing as women do, but some of them will play the "guess how old I am?" game!

I think they do it because they want to be taken seriously. If looked at as too old or young, they may feel that they lack credibility with the people they are speaking to. I know at my current job I have been told to keep my age a secret. Most of my co-workers are 20+ years my senior. Upper management is afraid I will be resented for hitting this level at such an early age.

It's always nice to be accepted as younger than we actually are, whether you can see the person or not.

They are embarassed of how old they are. There is a stigma in today's society against the aging process. It is also why so many older people have plastic surgery to have their youthful appearances back.

People make assumptions, and sometimes discriminate, based on your age--especially for women.

I look 10-15 years younger than my age, and when I let people know my real age, I see that little flicker in their eyes like "oh my god she's old." Then they treat me differently after that.

I don't know,it's like their weight also don't find them talking to much on that either.I'm 32,mabey when people get older they feel as if everyone around them is sure to be younger than them and there embarised.
