Umm....not entirely true.
The reason people assume they can live off the federal government is that many accomplish this every day - just take a quick look around most urban blight.
Many have "figured out" the system - albeit, while accepting a poverty-line existence to do it.

They don't assume, they are!......You are correct, the Government always wants something in return. I see the social services creating a whole new generation of slaves to the system, only they have more control than the old overseers ever had. I applaud those that only use this as a temporary last resort, and I have shame for those that have lived off of it for generations.

Why not? Congressmen can serve one term and then live off the federal government forever. Why can't someone that has no other means to live and probably does not have the intellect to find employment live off the federal government until he or she can find other means?

Because our government has the give a man a fish policy. If you give a man a fish he eats for a day, but if you teach a man to fish he eats for the rest of his life. I went to college out in Arizona far away from home, I was having trouble making it out there, so I went to the state for some food stamps just till I got on my feet. They told me that they could not help me, but if I were to quit school then they could help. What kind of bazarro world logic is that!

Because millions of people do it already. Albeit, nobody's getting rich from it, but lots do.
Ever heard of welfare and public assistance, medicaid, etc.? Government give-away programs. Good progams if they did what they were designed to do - help people that NEEDED the help until they could take care of themselves. Unfortunately, many have figured out how live on them indefinetly, and are satisified with that. So, that's their existance - and we all suffer because of it.

As long as a govenment allows it peoples to be slackies, they will be. Our elected govenment does not care what happens to the rest of our taxes as long as they get to keep their expense accounts.
This country was created on credit, corruption, and murder, why shouldn't the american low lifes carry on the tradition of taking advantage of other peoples generosity and hard work.
Sorry Leogirl, but the Social System is not making slaves of anyone. If it is your nature to be greedy or lazy, they only make it possible / easily accessible. Gotta love our welfare system for paying people to lay on their backs pumping out wards of the state and allow television corporations to make soap operas so addicting to these people, that they won't ever get of the couch and get a job.
