rectal temperatures are only done on very small children and babies and on very sick people in emegency situations, to get the core temperature. it shouldnt be done in everday situations because there is just no need, when the temp can be done orally or under the armpit, or even with a tympanic (ear) thermometer

Any professional will first tell you what they are going to first and why. They should leave the room for you to undress. When the nurse returns, she will ask you to lay on your stomach. She should then lubricate the thermometer, gently (and slightly) seperate your buttocks and slide the thermometer in your anus. As a professional, she be explaining each step to you as she performs the procedure, to help put you, the patient, at ease with minimal discomfort. Its really quick and painless. A little uncomfortable and embaressing, but I'm sure you have been through worse! I work in an Emergency Room and have done it a million times, really! Peace of cake....lol....Don't worry, you will do fine.

Rectal thermometers are used for babies so they don't ask anything. What they do is put the thermometer into the rectum, wait a few seconds & remove it.
