Male players helped the most in popularizing the sport initially. More recently however the task has been pretty even between the two genders.

Guess it depends on the sex of the person answering this question as to the answer you are going to get.

I would say that the Men's game made tennis as popular as it is. Could have something to do with the longer, 5 set matches which can produce plenty of dramas.

As a Male though I would have to say that I find the female game more enjoyable. Is it the tennis though? Probably not....cough..Sharapova...cough...Sharapova :)

Billy Jean King & John McEnroe & Jimmy Connors (Connors 91 US open 4th round match with Krickstein was awesome). And so many other tennis players its hard to pick just one.

popularity seemed to take off after the BIlly Jean King match with Bobby Riggs(?) - so I guess maybe female. Think its kinda dying out now tho.
