You need more than just a router....you need the following:
* An internet service provider (such as AOL, Comcast, etc)
* A modem (DSL, cable, dial-up, etc.)
* A router if you have more than one computer sharing that connection
* and depending upon your way of connecting to the router, either an RJ-45 cable or a wi-fi card if you don't have built in wi-fi capability on your laptop.

If you want to go wireless, you'll have to get a broadband connection and a wireless router. Dial up does not support multiple computers. You can however take the phone line from the desktop pc and plug it in your lap top if you wish.

You cannot use wireless with a dial-up connection- you must have a Broadband connection (such as Roadrunner)- not dialup or DSL. What happens in Broadband is that a signal is sent through aTV cable and a modem converts it into a ethernet cable, which then connects to a computer. For wireless, the ethernet cable then goes to a wireless router (such as Linksys), which wirelessly sends signal to a computer.

if your internet is broadband, cable, dsl, t1 t2 t3 you can buy a wireless router from circuit city (linksys is the best brand) and then buy the laptop card adapter. then hook your modem wire that goes to the computer to the router to the wireless router, then the open slot to the computer. install all the software and you got it goin on. if you hae dial up which makes that annoying dialing sound when you get on, you cant get wireless but you can do what i said and make a wirelss connection amongs the computers.

You have to buy something called a wireless router. That makes the internet signal into a wireless signal that your laptop can pick up. Check and make sure your laptop has a wireless card installed, otherwise you might have to buy one.

Get broadband (Cable or DSL). Then buy a wireless router like a LinkSys. You don't want to share dial-up - it's slow enoug as it is. Your laptop probably already has a built in wireless adapter but make sure.

Is it failing to %. up the prompt connection or the prompt adapter isn't yet completely put in. If its the "community accss only" issue after connecting to the prompt community. attempt to make positive that your gadget has the valid TCP/IP protocol and of which it has an ip address, subnet mask & default gateway. to ascertain this stuff bypass to start up>then style cmd (contained in the search field) and press enter> contained in the black exhibit screen (command prompt)>style ipconfig> then see if the three issues that i discussed are there. in the journey that they don't look there style in ipconfig /renew and then restart your gadget.
