i had this problem... i was pretty shy up into high school... in terms of strangers. i had a core group of friends that i had TONS of fun with, but on the outside i was so unhappy with myself that i was so self conscious and couldn't talk in a group very well, much better one-on-one. i am very outgoing with my friends, people i feel comfortable with, but very shy when it came to adults or large crowds or people who i considered "cooler" than me. then i forced myself to work on myself, my appearance, etc, meet new people, and i realized that i am a really good person. a pretty person. people should be glad to know me, and if they don't like me, then it's THEIR problem. i'm not talking about having a huge ego, but you have to build confidence in yourself. that's what being shy comes from; not feelign comfortable about yourself and holding things in because people might be judging you. but if you are happy with yourself, you will be able to go out in the world and not care as much what people think... therefore allowing yourself to grow and learn from others instead of holding back. i made myself meet people and decided "what the heck, i'll just act like myself. why should i care if they think badly about me? i'm a nice person!! i'm a fun person!!!" and i realized that many new people i met WANTED to be around me, and i did have great qualities. so once you feel that way about yourself, go out there and get to know other people, because you don't want to miss out on life and all the great things that are out there JUST because you are too shy to jump in. good luck! be happy, that's most important.
