Several years ago Great Performances broadcast the Goodman Theatres production of The Grapes of Wrath. It was a musicalization of the story. I have been trying to get a copy of that with no success. Does anyone have info on it? Thanks.

I remember that production. Michael Smith played the music, and it starred Gary Sinise.

I know two ways to see it if you're in New York City (but not get a copy). Visit the Museum of Television and Broadcasting; they probably have it on tape.

The other way to see even obscure plays is the video library at Lincoln Center, but you have to use a bit of subterfuge to get access to the tapes since it's supposed to be for scholarly use only.

I used my student ID and said I was writing a thesis on 20th century American drama and was able to watch the 1965 production of Lanford Wilson's "Rimers of Eldritch." It was just a shaky handheld camera (8mm, I'm guessing), but it was brilliant. And I doubt it could be found anywhere else.

You might also try writing to the Goodman Theater. They might know where you could get a copy.

Good luck.

They don't seem to have it at pbs.org, which would be the first place I would think of. Have you tried "pressuring" them to release it, if it's possible? I know that sometimes in the past, if there is enough interest, they will release something.
