RE:
What does the saying "someone wants to ride your coat tails" mean?

In a nutshell, it means getting to the top without ever having to work for it.

I usually think of it as it relates to nepotism, for example a man works hard his whole life to build a business from the ground up and becomes wealthy, and then his children are given a free ride to an Ivy League college and, upon graduation, are given a job in upper management at Daddy's company without ever having had to work for it. Before you know it Daddy retires and the kid owns the company.

Coattails Definition

It's similar to the saying, "Jump on the bandwagon" -- except for the bandwagon on this case is just yours.

For example -- if you got an awesome job - lot's of money, power, status......and a friend of yours wants you to bring them up w/ you.... they're 'riding on your coat tails."
(perhaps not the best analogy....but that's what I came up w/)

It sort of means they are doing what you already did. It can also mean they are taking credit for something you did...or the way the question is worded, they want to take credit for something you did.

They want to benefit from your successes. Literally, if you were to be rewarded for something great, they would stand on your coattails so that you can drag them along with you.

Think: leech.
