I like severe thunderstorms, snow, the cold, and some sort of attractive scenary like either a beach, heavily wooded, or mountains, something other than flat land in every direction.
I hate heat, lots of humidity, bible thumping conservatives (the fiscal conservatives I can stand),
I would like to be near a city with a commercial airport since I like to travel alot. I am getting a teaching degree so where ever there is a city I am almost certain to find a job, but my wife is an interior designer and will need a larger city within an hours drive to work in.

I know this might sound strange, since it seems as though the entire country believes there isn't anything between California and New York, but from your prerequisites I would definatelty recommend Wisconsin. Thunderstorms, snow, cold, Lake Michigan is so big there is NO difference asthetically between it and an ocean. (For those who dont believe, you have never seen 8 ft waves on lake michigan. It is bigger than most states)
Very hilly in SE part of state from the glaciers, no bible thumpers, Milwaukee or O'hare are your airports, and to top it off, Wisconsin has the best (or 2nd best) ACT/SAT scores in the nation and the teachers are paid very well. I would suggest Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee. Somewhere in the SE. One hour from Chicago, 1/2 from Milwaukee. Wisconsin is so beautiful that anyone with money in Illinois owns a cottage somewhere in Wisconsin. If you are more liberal, Madison Wisconsin is one of the coolest cities I have been to in the country. Besides...we have the greatest football team in the country!!!

I definitely agree with d h. You couldn't beat Wisconsin. Our son lives near Barraboo, in the Madison/U of Wisc area. It's got everything you ask for -- and cold, cold winters still, even w/ global warming.
But the summers are out of this world. Cool at night, rarely need air-conditioning at all. Green, green hills. Hiking trails you wouldn't believe. An open, lively political environment. Esp. Madison, which is a hotbed of progressive thought. Madison may not be a big city, but it has a good airport and lots of sophisticated people and an interest in Frank Lloyd Wright. One of his homes is near and open to the public, and one of his interesting public buildings is on the U of Wisc campus. And, yes, Wisconsin is way ahead of most of the country in public education -- still problems, but not like Bush country!
My other suggestion would be the Adirondacks, but I have only vacationed there, to get away from it all, so I'm not sure about accessibility to cities.
Best wishes!
