i have asked my pediatrician that also. b/c everytime i took my daughter in for her shots or check-up her doctor would complain about how much ear wax she had, but would never tell me how to clean it. so, i finally got irritated enough to ask the doctor, "well, then how do i clean it?" and she told me that i can use ear drops. i don't think you need a prescription but if you can't find it in cvs pharmacy or watever, then you should ask your pediatrician about it. the back of the bottle may say consult a physician if your child is under the age of 2. but don't worry. cuz my daughter was only 9 months.
while your baby is sleeping, preferrably in a deep sleep, put about 3 - 4 drops in the right ear twice a day for one week. the next week, put about 3 - 4 drops in the left ear, twice a day for one week. and keep switching off each week. they will also drain during the day and you just wipe that off with a wet cloth around the ear.hope this helps.
the doctor told me to do it while she was asleep b/c she will not like it and she will not hold still. and you shouldn't have to hold your baby down in a neck lock. so, it's better while they are sleeping.

My son's Dr. said not to put anything in his ear. She gave me the OK to use the special baby Q-Tips to clean the wax as it comes out on it's own. She said when you try to clean a babies ear, what we are actually doing is pushing the wax in farther. Only use the baby Q-Tip on the part of the ear you can see and wipe away the wax.

I just wrap a thin wash cloth around my finger and clean her ears. There's no reason to go poking around at wax inside the ear canal, it's there for a reason and it will come out on its own.

when you bathe a baby you should try not to get water in his or her ears. then when you're finished, be sure to tip their ear to each side for a few seconds while you're drying them off. that way if a little did get in, it will come out naturally. i raised 4 daughters who never had ear infections and who only cleaned out their ear canals when they got old enough to be interested in it and do it themselves.
you're right , the canal is tiny and nothing should be put in there.

using a q-tip pushes the ear wax further inside the ear canal. use some mineral oil for three days, put four drops in each ear and put some cotton in each ear. then on the fourth day get a bulb syringe and flush out each ear several times with warm water. it will remove the old ear wax. good luck!

actually you could do the old fashioned way and use a wash cloth and clean the ears .its much easier and that way you know you're not hurting the baby. just make sure to be gentle

I always just used the baby wash cloths. Q-tips are a big no-no!

only use a qtip on the outside of the ear (what you can touch without inserting it) . . warm water and a wash cloth on your pinky finger works well too

there are safety swabs out there, but i wouldn't use it unless your dr says o.k.
i think there are solutions you can use, but i think the recommended way is just to take a tissue and get anything that you can see and then leave it alone.
