Why is it that women will accept a flabby man, but men expect women to be perfect?

I saw this poll in CNN yesterday where the majority of women said they would accept a flabby man and I was surprised.

Because of the traditional roles that males and females have played in society.

Man have been "the providers". So women usually have looked more at their possessions, income, ability to provide, etc. then at their beauty. (If the guy was rich, might you overlook a little flab?) That is another reason why "older" man are often attractive to women. They already have money, a house, security, etc.

Woman have been "the childbearers". So a woman who is young, attractive and healthy is more likely to be (sorry if this is crude) "better breeding stock". So man tend to place physical beauty as one of their highest priorities. (They will put up with a bimbo if she has big enough breasts). Plus men are more easily stimulated by the visual then women. They like the women pretty, and most compile - which is why makeup, miniskirts and back breaking high heel shoes exist.

It's a commonly known fact that the physical tends to matter more to men. They have a lot more hormones driving them and are psychologically and physiologically geared to procreate and then care for a family. They are designed to look for a find a woman who will be able to bear their children well... therefore a lot of that attraction is physical.

Women, on the other hand, are designed to carry and nurture children, and their psychological and physiological programming has a lot to do with finding a mate who will be faithful, caring, a good father and a good provider. This is why a woman is often less concerned with physical attributes in a mate... she is looking for someone whose character qualities are going to be a good fit for her emotionally and practically.

This is not to say that men don't care about emotions or practicalities and women don't care about the physical - merely that the above tend to be the predominant drives and therefore do affect the way that males and females make choices about mates.

Well, thank you for your honesty about your own preference. I'm not surprised that women would say that for 3 reasons: 1. Most of them are more sensitive about their own imperfections than men are to theirs; 2. In general, women seem to be less appearance-driven and more personality-driven than men when choosing a mate; and 3. Of course, they'll SAY that! They don't want to come across as shallow; especially after all these years of accusing men of being shallow! (I'm not accusing them all of lying; just a large enough number of them to skew the results.)

So, did the poll say that men expect women to be perfect, or is that you talking?

Because women will go out of their way to be perfect, while most men think they all ready are perfect when they are flabby.

because society says that women have to be skinny to be perfect. television is always advertising weight loss drugs, all the women's magazines always have something in them about weight loss and toning, and the music that people make popular is by girls who look like sick anorexic crackheads. it's not that men expect an un-flabby woman, it's that the people of america make it out like it's only acceptable to be able to count your ribs if you're a woman. personally i like a woman to have some weight on her. looks healthy and feels soft to the touch.

Nobody tells women to settle for a flabby man they should respect themselves more and get good lookin guys also I think we men care more about lookes and women pay more attention to personality and stuff like that

Unfortunately a lot of men just go for the exterior look on women, and don't really try to get to know the whole person.

I'm not surprised. They're looking for different things in a mate. Men focus more on physical characteristics. Women focus more on what is inside.

Well, considering that over 60 % of Americans today are technically overwieght, and far less than 60 % of women in America are incapable of getting a date, I would say that your question is completely absurd.
