You can try the following programs first, but it does sound like your system is really corrupted and you may need to reformat. You can take it to a shop before reformatting.
But again try the following first. Remove or stop any Anti-virus you may have as 2 will not work together.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

You shouldn't have to reformat your hard drive but it is imperative to have virus protection. Reformatting will force you to reload all of your programs, and files.
AVG is free, easily downloadable for the basic version, and does a great job. Go to http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2 and download it. It is also important to have a firewall, especially if you are on a DSL or cable connection. I prefer Mcafee, you can purchase it inexpensively with rebates, or online (Ebay) but make sure it is a new copy that has not been registered. Norton is also good. The complete security suite is the way to go, helps with spyware, and popups, and junk mail.

CCleaner.com is also a great program to keep everything clean, cleans up your entire computer of unused stuff, and makes it run faster. Good luck, and feel free to email me with questions.

Which Distribution are you making use of? in case you employ Debian or similar then maximum contain Gnome G-Parted, that's often modern-day in equipment settings. i'd notwithstanding recommend downloading Gnome G-Parted for loose and putting it on disc, then boot it manually on the workstation which I genuinely have executed. it really is a large little application and it also facilitates you to format to HFS+ for Macs. the in common words different suggestion is to open the terminal in the applications Menu and command it to format. Google the instructions for the interest.

kinev is correct, reformatting and reinstalling is a good idea. Unfortunately, saving files from an infected system kind of makes the whole process redundant. If the files that you back up and restore have been infected, you'll be reinfecting your computer again....

You can re-format, just be aware that you will lose everything, so you need to save it all. Also, you will need to re-install your software. It's time consuming but not difficult. It works. I've done it a couple of times.
The steps to doing it are listed on this website and are easy to follow. I have not f'd up my computer using these steps.
