Go to the at&t speedtest site, http://help.sbcglobal.net/dsl/speedtest/, select the server nearest you from a drop-down list (the exact server is not that critical) and click start. You should get the results in a moment or two. You will have the option to submit the results to SBC by clicking on the submit button. This tool gets used a lot and does not always respond. If it takes forever, try a 3rd party site, such as http://www.2wire.com/, and click on speed meter; their results will appear more rapidly anyway.
If your modem is less than 2 1/2 yrs old, your modem has a user interface, and you can go to your modem gui (192.168.0.1 for the speedstreams) and get the connection details to see what the modem is measuring your speed at. The numbers you get by these methods should be similar.
The at&t speed test is only going to measure the speed from your modem to the at&t network, not the rest of the internet. AT&T is not responsible for slowdowns beyond its system. The speed tests from 3rd party sites, like the 2 wire sites and those mentioned by other answerers, are measuring the speed from the 3rd party site to the at&t system to your modem. Another factor that is involved in how fast you perceive your dsl to be is how fast your computer deals with what it is getting. Software programs like firewalls and antiviruses automatically slow down the data so it is not as fast as it could be, and other computer configuration and problems will also affect this. The speed of your dsl is only to your modem. The speed at which Windows thinks you are downloading an individual file is not your dsl speed.
If you are having slow browse issues, then call the at&t tech support line at 1-877-722-3755 for assistance.
