It's more commonly a boy's name although it is used for girls as well, personally I prefer Ryane or Ryann for girls in order to help clear up confusion.

I have heard it used both ways...there was Ryan Starr on American Idol 1, and Ryan Gossling the actor..and Saving Private Ryan..lol

I have heard it mainly with guys. But, I've known (not personally) two females named Ryan. There was a Ryan on American Idol sEaoson 1 that was a female.
