I would like to turn this around a little bit, when I first read your question/statement, it struck me as very pessimistic, nihilistic and overall depressing, however it also struck me as true. however, imagine that there was meaning in life, and imagine that you knew it. isnt this a lot worse, doesnt it make you feel trapped in a way, because alll you are doing is fulfilling a role in this life that a higher being created for you?I know some people like the idea of having a role to fulfill, but I think it is infinitely better that we dont know whether we are just insignificant molecules or not. This illusion of free will makes the world go round, doesnt it?

-isnt it obvious that we are just insignificant molecules living on a rock, making up nonsense like religion?

To me it's obvious you are educated way beyond your intelligence. You have made all these observations and failed to apply any logic to your observations.

1. there are many religions, and people generally believe what they are born into

And all these religions believe there is a diety some where that started it all and there are repercussions for actions. What have you got to prove they are totally wrong? I'm not going to say any religion is totally correct but you say they are all totally wrong. Now that is vast.

2. when was the last CNN reported a speech by god

CNN reports speeches by man because they listen to men, When was the last time you are CNN ever shutup long enough to even listen for what God has to say?

3. we need religion because life is worthless

What are you still doing alive? Do you have a totally masochistic attitude? Why put up with something that is worthless?

4. we have no purpose ... we are just organic mold on a plant that has figured out how to create literature and the internet ... cool ... but a few nukes, and we'll ALL be forgotten

Just because YOU don't know even if you have a purpose doesn't mean you don't have one. Can your simple brain understand the vastness of the universe? Can you comprehend the actions that alter atoms into different atoms? Do you know what makes something that is alive alive? What is different between someone that is alive and someone that is dead? How can you be so certain you will be completely forgotten forever?

5. we are incapable of accepting meaninglessness cuz then we just might as well die

Can you really die? Or is what makes you a person with a modicum of intelligence changed into something different?

6. so you see, its a BIG LIE .... but we cant admit it!

Maybe maybe not. It's a matter of hope, fear, and ignorance. If there is no diety, no cause for life as we know it then we are screwed. Why not end it now. Blow your brains out. If there is a diety but it doesn't care about what we do and our only purpose is to provide entertainment for the diety then we are screwed. Why not end it now. Blow your brains out and tell the diety to change channels you quit. OR there is a diety who does care about you and you have propose. In the end of this life on this small ball you will have to answer for your actions. What will your reward be? The first two options suck- No hope there. Fear that I might be wrong caused by the ignorance of what comes after this life and the hope of something better later controls my life now. Maybe I'm wrong and you are right. But then maybe it's the other way around. If I'm wrong what have I lost? If you are wrong where will you be?

7. The emperor has no clothes .... accept it for one second ....

Maybe he doesn't. But what PROOF do you have you are absolutely 100% correct in ALL your assumptions? Or is this just your theory? What if YOUR theory is flawed?

8. now lets go back to the lie that we do matter ;)

Do you have proof the whole thing is a lie? Are we that insignifigant? You can say this whole show started billions of years ago with a big bang. And everything is just an accident. I'll agree with the first part. But not the second.

OK way back there was a bang. What caused the bang? Where did all that material come form? An accident that ice floats in water? No other chemical compound acts that way. Think about what would happen if ice sank. And that is just one of thousands of things that would have to be accidents.

You go right ahead and believe in accidents. And I'll go on believing in a diety. In a hundred years or less we'll both know who was right.

>>>1. there are many religions, and people generally believe what they are born into<<<

Well, there are many forms of science too, and science often comes to different conclusions about the same general things -- is that a reason to say that science is "nonsense," as you've done with religion?

>>>2. when was the last CNN reported a speech by god<<<

Why would you expect a bunch of secular-humanist liberals, who work at a news network that's run by a religion-basher, to report anything about God?

>>>3. we need religion because life is worthless<<<

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it, even if it's wrong.

>>>4. we have no purpose ... we are just organic mold on a plant<<<

Sounds like a great excuse for justifying the idea that we don't have to follow any moral boundaries -- "we're just insignificant specks, so it doesn't matter -- let's just do whatever the hell we want!"

Seems that such justification is your purpose all along here.

someone was jaded by religion at an early age.....
the fact is, no one is going to be able to argue you into believing in something you aren't willing to admit may be right.
In your head, you ARE a god, because apparently anyone who might disagree with you is considered disillusioned or brainwashed. On that note, some people who convert to Christianity do so knowing they will be ostracized by their families if they do so, unless their family kills them instead, so don't say that everyone instantly believes what they are born into.
A child who is constantly told by his parents that the sky is orange has the ability to look up and see for himself that it is blue. Every person will make their own choice of what they believe, regardless of what their family or certain critics on the internet might say.

There are of course two alternatives:
1. The universe had a certain chance of existing as we know it or not.
2. The universe exists because God willed it.

To me it seems to take a lot more faith to believe everything we see is a pure accident.
P.S. I am a scientist (Physics) and I have looked at it rationally, the conclusion I came to is that there must be a God, and the God of Abraham is the only one that fits the way a god that created us would have to be, rationally speaking.

I'm so sorry you think that. How depressing.
My purpose is to serve my God, be happy and live an exciting wonderful life. One person can change the whole world. So why say we are insignificant? We aren't. I have a life, I don't sit around thinking I'm worthless. Pessimism must be fertile on this site.

In answer to your question and not your points, I vote NO.
I realize you don't believe the Bible, but just go ahead and read the Genesis account--just the first two chapters. Note, as you read, how God created the rest of creation. Then note how he created man and note the intimacy of the relationship he created with man--the responsibilities he gave him, he attributes he gave him, the direct friendship he gave him.

It may not change your mind, but at least it should give you an alternative view, one that is worthy of your consideration.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Jeremiah 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Does this answer your question? If not, well, the answer is a resounding NO!

I think humans are "programmed" to believe that the universe revolves around them. It's been proven time and time again that we're not. Copernicus, Galileo, etc.

Life can be very fufilling without religion. I've always enjoyed the emotion of human existence more than explaining the why.

i think youve got the gist of it. all this time and money spent worshipping sure could be used in ways to make the life of all us individual molds a lot better! god is a man made idea, conceived when there were no explanations for the things that were happening to people. remember, (he) was thought up by men who believed the world was flat, and the center of the one universe!!
