I would suggest a dog. A lifelong bond can be created when a child grows up with a dog.

Don't get a puppy/dog unless you are prepared to take on the responsibility. You have to buy food, let it out, give it walks, train it, spend time with it, give baths, buy a collar and leash... it goes on and on. And they aren't good pets for the first time, some people don't realize how much maintenance a pet dog takes.
Yet still in my opinion fish get boring and are no fun.
Birds are a nice choice, and they have a nice personality. There are the nice pair of love birds, all the way to the loud and optimistic parrot. Though... they can keep you up at night. O_o
Hamsters / Guinea pigs are a good choice, yet they can also get pretty boring.
A cat is a good pet for a first time. They don't get boring and are usually gentle and sweet.
A don't suggest a bunny/rabbit... the house will spell like urine if it is left inside, and if its outside, neighbor dogs or cats will probably find a way to eat it.
Of course, everyone likes different animals and everyone is different in how much time they have available to care for pets. I recommend a cat, they have many pros and few cons. =) I hope that you have fun with your new pet!

My first pet (one that I had to take care of on my own) was a goldfish. Then I got a hamster, then a rat, then a rabbit, then a ferret, and finally dogs. Meanwhile, my parents always had pets for the family, that they took care of ... we always had at least one cat and a dog while I was growing up.
So basicly, if you want to take care of the pet, a cat or dog is a great choice, but if it is for the child to be the most responsible one, start out small and work up to bigger and more involved pets.

How old is the person getting the pet? How much time does the person have to care for the pet? Type of housing? How much can the person afford to spend on the pet, food, vet, spay/neuter, emergency vet visits? Consider all that, it should give you the info you need to make an informed decision

for the first pet i would get a fish or a cat, maybe a hamster. a hamster..you just clean the cage and give it food and water. a cat..just clean the litterbox and give it food and water and a fish..just change the water. the animals all need attention though. the cat also needs to go the vet and get shots. good luck and let me know what u choose

My kids got parakeets. They just feed them and take them out to play sometimes. Fish is a good choice as well, but they seem to die easy. My brother had a hamster as his first pet. It was pretty easy as well. (that is until it got out somehow and climbed onto my bed in the middle of the night, UUUH!)

It depends what kind of pet. A cat, a dog? I like dogs. I have a Jack Russell but I wouldn't recommend one because they are kinda high maintenance.

go to Amazon.com and search for "Are you the Pet for Me?" A great book telling you the pros and cons of most common pets. It will help you make a decision.

If it is for a young kid I think I would recommend a puppy, a resistant one, like a beagle or a jack russell, they won't get hurt or die easily and they get along with children pretty well, they're easy to train as well.
